Lock down

WOW what a day Friday. I was sitting with about 3 students finishing up on adding fractions. The principal came over the intercom and told us to keep the kids inside during recess. And also check our email. So I being the obedient one and also brimming with curiosity, checked my E-mail. It said that someone in our neighborhood was murdered. We were on lockdown. All doors were locked to the outside except for the front doors. About 30 minutes later, He came over the intercom again.

This time it was asking if all teachers with student teachers, aides etc. basically those who didn't have kids at that time to please come to the office. It seems that the news got hold of the incident and parents were coming to get their kids. It was crazy. They had to sign them out and a teacher etc. went to get them. We didn't want parents running all over the school. That lasted about 1/2 hour. We were then told that the police had found the guy and for the last 15 minutes it was crazy. If they hadn't of caught him, we would be having all the kids in the gym and allowing them to leave only with their parent. Nothing like a lock down to excite your day. I actually wanted to see the chaos that would of been in the gym. Oh well. After 25 years of teaching this was a first. I don't think it will happen again.
